Matlock, Marvin E.

Marvin E. Matlock, age 86, of Brownwood passed away peacefully Monday evening at his home.Funeral Services were held at 10 AM Thursday in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Tim Skaggs and Steve Polaski officiating. Burial followed in the Holt Cemetery. Visitation was held from

6 – 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.Marvin was born September 2, 1925 at Holt, Texas the son of the late Luther Monroe and Winnie Vida Gober Matlock.

He attended schools at Holt. He married Joyce Hayes who preceded him in death and later married Betty Evans who also preceded him in death. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy from 1942 to 1944 serving at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. He later worked as a steel worker for Loadcraft in Brady, Texas and also a fence builder. He was married to Ruth Gage in Brownwood on July 25, 1995. He was a member of the Nazarene Church in Brownwood and had been a resident of Brownwood for the past 45 years moving from Richland Springs.Marvin loved gardening and coin collecting and will be missed by those who knew him.He is survived by his wife, Ruth Matlock of Brownwood; daughter, Elizabeth Murray and husband, Tom of San Saba; son, Benton Matlock of Brownwood; grandchildren, Michael Murray of Abilene and Kayla Murray of Mineral Wells; step-children, Charles Troyer and wife, Susan of Brownwood; Marvin Troyer and wife, Lori of Brownwood; Cynthia Masengale and husband, Len of Trinity, Texas; Donna Miles and husband, Craig of Buckeye, Arizona; Tom Troyer and wife, Caryn of Granbury; 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; sisters,Mildred Miller of Bulverde, Tx and Maxine Polaski and husband, Charles of Brownwood; brother,Warren Matlock and wife, Sherry of Parker, Texas; several nieces and nephews also survive.Marvin was preceded in death by his spouses, Joyce and Betty, his parents, a sister Carol Polaski, and a brother-in law, Gerald Miller.

 

McCoury, Carolyn K.

Carolyn K. McCoury, 79, of San Saba, passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Austin Heart Hospital in Austin, Texas. She was born September 29,

1930 in Bell County, Texas, the daughter of Will G. Kirkpatrick and Ida Hamilton Kirkpatrick.

Carolyn Allie Kirkpatrick and Billie Bub McCoury were married on April 15,

1950 in San Saba, Texas.

She attended the Bend United Methodist Church. Carolyn was a member of Gideons Ladies Aux., San Saba Historical Commission, Fellowship of Christian Women, Bend United Methodist Church and the prayer chain.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Billie Bub McCoury; her sons, Gregg McCoury and his wife, LaVada of San Saba, and Steven McCoury and his wife, Karen of Chappel; her grandchildren, Michelle McCoury Lock and her husband, Jeremiah of Blackjack; Waylon McCoury and his wife, Sarah of San Saba; Ryan McCoury and his wife, Ashley of Merkel; Joshua McCoury of Baytown, and Weston McCoury of San Saba; her great-grandchildren, Mahaila McCoury, Ross McCoury, Breck McCoury, Logan Lock, Colton McCoury and Jenna McCoury and several nieces and nephews.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents.

Services were held at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Don Graham Officiating and Rev. Celia Kitchens.

Interment followed at the Chappel Cemetery.

McPherson, Willis Ray

Willis Ray (Rusty) McPherson passed away on February 8, 2010, in Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Rusty McPherson was born in Bell County, Texas, to Samuel Grant and Ruby (Cooper) McPherson on March 27, 1933. He married Reba June Brodie on June 24, 1955, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Rusty joined the Navy in 1951 and served in the Korean War. After four years in the Navy, he enlisted in the Air Force where he worked in air traffic control. Later, he served as a technical writer for the Air Traffic Control School. He retired after 21 years of service to his country.Rusty and his family moved to the Elm Grove Community in 1972 where he began farming and ranching. Rusty was a Master Electrician and a skilled carpenter. He worked as a group leader for New Horizon Ranch for Children.Rusty was a life-long learner. After retiring from the military, he earned his Bachelor's of Education Degree from Tarleton State University. He enjoyed reviewing books for Howard Payne University. Some of his reviews appeared on Barnes and Noble's website.

Rusty was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Rusty is survived by his wife of 54 years, Reba June McPherson of Elm Grove; one daughter, Valerie Gossett and her husband Wayne of Elm Grove; and one son, Richard McPherson and his wife Sharon of Abilene.He is also survived by three brothers and one sister: John Earl McPherson of Richland Springs; Jack McPherson; Sam McPherson and his wife Jeannette; Sandra Overstreet and her husband Eddie; two sisters-in-law, Etta McPherson and Pat McPherson, all of Llano.Four grandchildren: Gary Gossett and his wife Claylene of Rochelle; Rayna Skaggs and her husband Will of DeLeon; Casey Gossett and his wife Sally of Elm Grove; and Chad Gossett and his wife Carolyn of Brownwood.Eight

great-grandchildren: Shaylene Williams, Amber Brown, Shawn Skaggs, Jordan Gossett, Jacey Gossett, Chase Gossett, Kenzie Gossett, Dusti Gossett, and several very special nieces and nephews.Rusty was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Bill McPherson and Mike McPherson, all of Llano.

Services will be held Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at the Howell-Doran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Ramsey officiating. Interment to follow at a later date at the ceremony at Varga Chapel Cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to the the Richland Springs School Library.
